Can You Live in Your House During a Remodel?

This is one of the most common questions we get, and the honest answer is that it depends far less on the size of the project than on how the site is run.

The short answer

Usually yes, outside the active work zone. We seal off the area, control dust, protect floors and walkways, and clean the site daily so the disruption stays contained. A single-room project is almost always liveable. A down-to-studs whole-house remodel usually is not.

What makes it manageable

• A real barrier, not a bedsheet. Sealed, zipped containment between the work zone and the rest of the house.
• Negative air and dust extraction at the source, not just a fan in a window.
• Protected routes. Floors and walls along the path the trades walk every day.
• Daily clean-up, so the house resets each evening instead of degrading all week.
• Predictable hours, so you know when it is quiet and can plan around it.

The two things that decide it

In practice, staying put comes down to whether you keep a working kitchen and a working bathroom. Lose one and it is inconvenient. Lose both and most people are happier elsewhere, even for a short project.

When we recommend moving out

We will say so directly when a project genuinely warrants it: whole-house structural work, extensive systems replacement, or anything where the house is without heat, water or a usable bathroom for an extended stretch. Recommending you stay in a house that is not fit to live in helps nobody, and it slows the work down as well.

If you have children or pets

Worth raising at the site visit rather than on day one of construction. It changes how we sequence containment, where materials are stored, and which access route the trades use. It is a much easier conversation before the schedule is set.
